Timber has been one of the most important and widely used building materials since Australian architecture began in 1788.

Old timber cottages are rather like old people: they may look frail but they are often very hardy. All the same, there are many things to consider when caring for or restoring an old timber house. Above all, never clad them with aluminium, fake 'weatherboards' or other modern material.
